LEAD Class Reminders
1. Managing USA Learns class site ·
- Coach enrolls students.and gives them the class key after they have completed the first lesson.
- Coach corrects the two “Write about it!” activities in Unit 1 in Course Two and shows the student how to make corrections.
- Once Units 1 & 2 (Course One) or Lesson 1 (Course Two) are completed, refers them to SMARTT, and sends student information to the Hub, the teacher will correct the work.
- Students are “inactive” if they have not completed 6 credit hours in the past two months..
- When students who are inactive are ready to return, the coach changes “inactive” to “active” to indicate that the students have completed 6 credit hours, want to return, and agree to the contract to spend 5 hours a week on the class.
- When appropriate, the coach removes students from USA Learns. (Teacher no longer sees the work, but students can continue working on their own on the USA Learns independent learners site.)
2. Transitioning between courses (teacher approval needed) ·
- From Course One to Course Two, students must: (a) introduce themselves on student website, (b) demonstrate their ability to do the “Write about it!” corrections, and (c) sign a new contract. Course Two is for students at SPL Level 4 and 5. (Be sure students are ready for this course so they won’t be frustrated.)
- From Course Two to Course Three, students must complete an evaluation, sign a new contract, participate in an online meeting, and have achieved 4 points on “ESOL Practice” on the student website (www.leadesol.weebly.com/more-practice-for-usalearns.html).
3. Exploring the student website
- All Course Two students need to introduce themselves on the website (www.leadesol.weebly.com).
- Students can participate in extra credit activities for each unit on the student website. However, they need to complete 6 credit hours per month in USA Learns before they can earn points on the extra credit site.
- The “Congratulations” tab on www.leadesol.weebly.com lists students who have completed a class or who have received extra credit points. This is a place for students to congratulate LEAD friends or share something good that has happened in their lives.
4. Encouraging Persistence
- Students should be working outside of regularly scheduled class time for distance learning. The first few weeks are critical to success in distance learning. Coaches encourage students to keep to the schedule completed at registration.
- Students need to reply to the welcome letter and any other communication from the teacher. Coaches check the accuracy of the email address when a student registers by sending an email and requesting a reply.
- If students prefer text messages, they must give the phone number to the coach who sends it to the teacher.
- Teachers send a mid-month report to the coach who communicates with the students about their participation in the class. The coach returns an annotated mid- month report with an update on students.
