Give LACES data person at your agency the information to refer students to HUB, including pre-assessment test score. (Once the coach has registered students in LACES, the HUB teacher will welcome the students to her class, and check their work regularly.)
Note: This may differ according to your agency’s procedures.
First Meeting
- Welcome the student and discuss the difference between distance learning and a classroom setting. Give students in Course 2 the Student Handbook to read and complete at home. Read the handbook together with students in course one so they will know what it means to be in an online class.
- Describe the requirements for the distance learning class.
- Ask students to send an e-mail or text to request to be in the class.
- If you want to determine whether a students should be in Course 1 or Course 2, have them take the Where to start assessment on the Teacher Resource page.
Second Meeting
- In Student Handbook, sign the contract and review the time management schedule with student.
- Register students on USA Learns. They will be on the Independent Learners site. The work completed on this site will be transferred to the class site when the student receives the class key at the third meeting.
- Give students the USA Learns Directions guide to bring home.
- Check that students in Course 2 know how to do the activities in Unit 1, including the “Write about it!” activities.
Third Meeting
- Give class key to students who want to continue with distance learning and have completed most of the required units/lesson.
- Give an overview of the student Weebly website and ask students to introduce themselves on the 'Meet Other Students' page.
- Give TABE CLAS-E Reading/Writing or Best Plus Assessment Test.
- Correct both of the Lesson 1 “Write about it!” activities in Course Two (click for instructions on this site's USA Learns page) and show students how to read comments and make changes. (Click for instructions on the student Weebly site.)
After Third Meeting

- Have students go to usalearns.org and click “Start Now!”
- Have students fill out their personal information. They must have an e-mail account to register. Note: Everyone receives an email from USAL to “confirm the address” when they register. If they do not respond, they will not be able to change their password.
- Provide students with class key after they have completed lesson 1 in Course 2 or two units in Course 1. See below for your course (1, 2, 3), and program, class title, and class key.
