Student Website |
- The Hub designed a LEAD ESOL student website so the students could have a sense of belonging to a community of distance learning students. There are many valuable resources on this site.
- The coach gives an overview of the website to the student and has the student introduce himself/herself by answering the suggested questions.
Transitioning Courses |
Students must complete certain tasks before they transition to the next course. Please do not give the class key to a student until they have completed the requirements.
- Students moving from Course 1 to Course 2
- introduce themselves on the 'Meet Other Students' page on the student website
- submit an online form the teacher sends
- Students moving from Course 2 to Course 3
- do an evaluation
- complete 3 points on the 'More Practice for USA Learns' page on the student website
- complete a brief writing assignment the teacher sends
Retention |
- If a student does not complete a unit/lesson in two months:
- they will be put on the inactive list in USA Learns. This makes the student get locked out of the class and unable to access USA Learns at all.
- Within the following month, the student must meet with the coach and agree to the contract.
- If no work is completed within the month following that, the student will be removed from the class, and will regain access to the independent learners' site, but the teacher will not see the work.
- Note: USA Learns automatically removes any student that has not signed in for 6 months.
- Remind students that they need to correct the writing activity if there is no score. They read the teacher's corrections and make the changes. 80% in Course 2 and 90% in Course 3 or above do not need any additional correction.
- Students in Course 3 need to complete 43 stories to receive a certificate. They can choose the stories that interest them.
- Students must complete certain tasks before they move from Course 1 to Course 2 and from Course 2 to Course 3. Do not give the class key to a student until they have completed the requirements. (See above.)
Writing Assignments |
- Students are enrolled in Course 2 after the coach corrects both Lesson 1 writing activities and gives them a final score. The coach lets the coordinator know the student is ready to begin the class.
- A frequent problem for students is not saving or doing the “Write About it” activities. The most difficult activity is making changes in the writing activity. The coach must correct the two writing activities in Lesson 1 only, score it, and show the student how to make changes. Below is a video to show you the process. The process for the student can be found in the student directions and on the Help Using USA Learns page of the student Weebly site.
